Soulful Memphis -- home of Elvis Presley's beloved Graceland mansion and of the first railroad connecting the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean -- reigns among the nation's music capitals, where Mississippi Delta and Chicago blues traditions meet on Beale Street. Historically, Memphis also stands as a flash point for integration struggle, and assassination site of Martin Luther King. Since then, Memphis has evolved into a rich multicultural destination, with vibrant African-American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American cultural communities and attractions, from B.B. King's Blues Club to Davies Manor Plantation and the Alex Haley House and Museum. Marking the 50th anniversary of the 1956 release for Presley's Don't Be Cruel / Hound Dog two-sided smash single, along with other milestones including movie release of Love Me Tender, Memphis has morphed into a scene of virtual non-stop half-century flashback celebrations, leading toward the 30th anniversary commemoration of Elvis' death on August 16, 1977. Other Memphis magnets include Casey Jones Village, the Art Museum at the University of Memphis, AutoZone Park Tours, and, of course, the entire Beale Street Entertainment District. Memphis dining runs the gamut from multi-star French fare amid elegant surroundings to hole-in-the-wall barbeque joints, with plenty in between. Greater Memphis accommodations range from family owned motels to luxury hotels including the $40 million, 203-room Westin Beale Street Hotel, opening in early 2007.
